Notes: | This US article presents a number of studies and statistics to reflect the prevalence of women who have experienced violence or other traumatic incidents and their consequent interaction with mental health services. Such experiences of trauma may include child abuse, physical or sexual abuse, witnessing domestic violence as a child or severe family conflict. Impacts on women’s mental health may include developing depression, schizophrenia or PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder), substance abuse or admission to inpatient mental health facilities. Several studies detailed in this article conducted research on the intersection between these issues and lifetime trauma, sampling women seen in mental health settings. |
