Notes:  General Overview: This Australian paper examines issues surrounding the abuse of older people by their family members (sometimes referred to as elder abuse). The paper provides an overview of international and national literature, with discussion of definitions on the types, prevalence and the nature of the abuse, its links with domestic violence, the effects of abuse on older people and some best practice approaches for early intervention and prevention.

Discussion: The authors argue that there continues to be underreporting of abuse of older adults and a lack of professional and public awareness of the issue by service providers. They explore the barriers to reporting and help seeking by older adults. They discuss the need to explore and make sense of violence against older women, and examine issues of patriarchy, power and control for effective intervention.

The authors discuss and consider different response models to the problem of abuse of older people. For example, victim advocacy models empower victims by building their capacity to make decisions on their own, while the public health model protects the public through surveillance, screening, public education. The domestic violence prevention and restorative justice models focus on empowerment and prevention, repairing family relationships and controlling risk.

Conclusion: The authors conclude by arguing that prevention of abuse of older people requires an interdisciplinary understanding and a coordinated multiple service response that ensures better education for service providers to identify abuse, establish appropriate protocols and build stronger social networks. An increased dialogue between the ageing and domestic violence academic, research, policy and service delivery sectors is strongly recommended.
