Examines the development and philosophical underpinnings of problem-oriented courts, an emerging alternative to the system of adversarial criminal justice, and discusses how these specialised courts represent an attempt to shift the focus away from the individual conduct of the offender towards a recognition of the social issues and problems underlying criminal behaviour. The various types of problem-oriented courts, such as drug courts, mental health courts, domestic violence courts, community courts and Aboriginal courts, are then outlined and some of the criticisms directed at these initiatives addressed. Argues that if the potential of specialised courts to improve the quality of justice in Australia is to be realised, continuing research and evaluation of the various programmes are essential.
