Notes: | The Victorian Aids Council (VAC) and the Gay Men’s Health Centre (GMHC) see many men for issues about violence in their relationships but they do not have counsellors who specialise in this area. Similarly very few mainstream services can provide appropriate sexually sensitive advice to same sex couples. Issues include the identification of violence in same sex couples as a power issue rather than a gender one; there are no gay specific refuges; HIV/AIDS complicates violence issues because of factors such as guilt; medication related mood swings; and general health and infection risk. The first male behaviour change group in a same sex service has recently been developed in Victoria through counselling services at VAC and GMHC but it is not their core work or specialty. Argues that men have less skill to negotiate problems in abusive relationships and this needs to be developed by specialist services. |
