Notes: | Reports on the perceptions of urban African American women concerning the prosecution of their abusers. This study is unique because, unlike previous research, the participants were not involved in any stage of prosecution. It also contributes to the scarce literature on the topic. The data were obtained from 207 telephone interviews conducted after an incident known to Detroit’s Police Department. More than 65 per cent of the respondents considered that charges should be pressed against their partners. The main reason stated was the unacceptability of the violent conduct. Women who considered that the episode was minor or who experienced the violence for the first time opposed prosecution. |
