Notes: | This article provides an overview of a review of the communications components of Australian and overseas social marketing/public education campaigns addressing violence against women. This process was a part of the 2005 Victorian Health Promotion Foundation (VicHealth) development of a community attitudes survey to inform future activity aimed at reducing men’s violence against women. A total of 31 campaigns were reviewed in detail with a number of other campaigns briefly described. Campaigns from various Australian States/Territory were reviewed as well as overseas campaigns drawn mostly from the United Kingdom, the United States, New Zealand and South Africa. The campaigns varied in terms of their target groups and behavioural objectives with the review outlining a number of different message themes used by the campaigns, including strengths, weaknesses and suggestions for additional themes for future consideration. Discussed are the authors’ concerns regarding possible unintended negative consequences of the 2005 UNIFEM White Ribbon Day television advertising campaign in Australia. Reference is made to the usefulness of the review for any health or welfare professional or project planner involved in public education concerning violence against women.
