Notes:  General Overview: Data from the 1995 US National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health was analysed for associations between intimate partner abuse experienced in the past, recent intimate partner abuse and risk of HIV infection.

Methods: In this secondary data analysis, the cohort investigated were 2058 sexually active young women in relationships with male partners. Information was collected about socio demographic characteristics, past relationships and, using Conflict Tactics Scales, experience of intimate partner abuse. HIV risk was measured by consistent condom use over the past 12 months.

Implications: Implications for nursing practice are given including: assessing for partner abuse; providing resources regarding domestic violence for nursing staff; and making partner abuse prevention and intervention resources available in clinical settings.
