Notes:  This article discusses the links between animal abuse and violent crimes against people, in particular domestic violence. It is argued that individuals who enjoy inflicting pain might not limit their cruelty to animals. A significant proportion of serial killers and sadistic murders have a history of animal mistreatment. Various US and UK studies cited also reveal a connection between domestic abuse of women and children and cruelty to pets. Abusive partners threaten, hurt or kill the animals to control their families. Some of the outcomes are women’s reluctance to leave, so the animal remains safe, and children’s abuse of pets and other children.
