Notes:	Highlighting the scarcity of research into the effectiveness of various interventions with victims of domestic violence, this article reports and discusses the methodology and results of a US study designed to assess the impact of a community-based advocacy programme on women's subsequent experiences of violence, their quality of life, levels of social support and ability to access community resources. Findings of the study suggest receiving the services of a paraprofessional advocate increases the likelihood that quality of life will improve, less physical violence will be experienced, social supports and ability to access community resources will be enhanced and symptoms of depression will lessen. Argues the research supports the premise that trained advocates can act as important agents of change in their communities and that the impact of these services on women's lives can be both short and long term. Concludes by proposing possible reasons the intervention acted to protect women from further violence and enhance their quality of life and suggesting specific factors which may have contributed to these positive outcomes.
