Notes:  Outlines the methodology and results of a [US] study aimed at assessing the impact of intensive hospital-based treatment for alcohol dependence on the incidence of intimate partner and/or marital violence and marital satisfaction. The findings indicate a significant decrease in the prevalence and frequency of both physical and psychological abuse following alcohol treatment. However, violence was not completely eliminated in many cases and improvements did not necessarily remain consistent. Further, marital satisfaction was not significantly affected in the long term. Suggests further research into role of treatment programmes in permanent behaviour change.
