Notes:	Discusses the advances of the last 20 years to our knowledge of intimate partner violence and summarises promising areas of research for future study. Considers that a greater understanding of the prevalence and of the scope of intimate partner violence has occurred through recent research and that the greatest advancement has come about through analysis of the typology of violent relationships. Methodological advances in the development and refinement of tools to assess partner violence include self-report instruments, observational methods of assessment and such innovations as semi-structured interviews and diary methods to obtain data which predict the likelihood of violence, ecological factors preceding violence and the effects of substance abuse on violent behaviour. Comments on significant advances in psychophysiology and neuroimaging research and their contribution to our appreciation of the neurobiological basis of violence. Suggests that future research be directed to the evaluation and refinement of prevention and intervention techniques which have recently been developed and that the scope of study should be expanded to include both victim and perpetrator perspectives, rather than the study of one to the exclusion of the other. To this end, the authors support the development of comprehensive theoretical paradigms drawing from a multidisciplinary research field including law, psychology and sociology, and suggest the use of coordinated community action models which integrate legal, social work and health services.
