Notes:  Asserts that women's experiences with domestic violence are shaped by a variety of socio-cultural factors, including cultural values and practices, attitudes to women and minority status. These differences influence women's coping and help seeking behaviours and how the meaning of the violence is understood. The responses of women of Japanese background living in US to domestic violence are examined. These women may appear passive due to a cultural belief in endurance. This may cause clashes with child protection workers. Intervention and prevention programmes are recommended to meet the needs of Japanese women, as are practices that take into consideration the intersection of gender, race, culture and ethnicity.
