Notes: | Outlines the methodology and results of an Australian research study that drew upon social learning theory to analyse the relationship between parental violence and subsequent problems managing couple conflict. A select body of research into the prevalence of both male-to-female and female-to-male intimate partner violence and the various risk factors associated with it is reviewed. It is argued that, while the results of the study show an association between male exposure to parental violence and poor conflict management skills, a similar association does not exist for females. Some of the limitations of the study are acknowledged and further research into the role of negative affect, behaviour and cognitions in mediating the association of parental violence and current relationship violence is advocated. |
