Notes:  Many of the same debates that we see in Australia around this issue have been underway in the United Kingdom for some time. Dr Aisha Gill, Reader in Criminology at the University of Roehampton in the UK, is a specialist in this area. She has served on numerous UK Government working parties on so-called ‘honour’ killings and forced marriage, and has published a number of papers exploring how victims of forced marriage and ‘honour’ based violence experience the civil and criminal justice systems in the UK and the Iraqi Kurdistan region. Dr Gill offers a unique perspective on the issue of criminalising forced marriage, drawing on the recent attempts to criminalise this action in the UK.
