Notes:	Discusses the concept of ‘restorative justice’, what it means and the various claims that have been made about the benefits of this approach for victims, offenders and communities, both domestically and internationally. Some of the major criticisms of restorative justice approaches are identified and the paucity of restorative justice programmes that have been evaluated empirically is highlighted. The debate surrounding the application of restorative justice models to family or domestic violence contexts is then considered and existing research into women’s perspectives on the utility of restorative justice approaches is reviewed. Specific models of restorative justice used in the US, Canada, Europe and New Zealand to address gendered violence are examined and the range of alternative justice practices being used in Australian Indigenous communities are discussed. The benefits of developing best practice guidelines for implementing restorative justice models aimed at redressing power imbalances and ensuring safety and accountability are also considered.
