Notes:  Outlines the methodology and results of a study exploring factors associated with repeat violence amongst batterers entering the criminal justice system in Washington, DC (USA). Focusing on the predictive value of the level and type of psychological abuse in relationships, it is suggested that a broader conception of abuse which considers psychological abuse such as dominance and isolation as predictive of repeat violence, is needed. It is further argued that such abuse should be regarded not only as a risk factor for future violence but an outcome variable or part of the overall cycle of power, violence and control.
