Written by Dr Michael King, the Stipendiary Magistrate for Geraldton, Western Australia, this article discusses some of the difficulties faced by magistrates in addressing the underlying issues faced by victims of domestic violence seeking protection and restraining orders. The concept of 'therapeutic jurisprudence' is then examined and the key features of the Roads to Healing programme, developed by the Geraldton court, the Geraldton Regional Domestic Violence Project, Geraldton police and local victim support agencies, are presented. The article concludes by highlighting some of the benefits of the programme and the need for ongoing evaluation of its effectiveness.
