Notes:  Reviews and critiques research into rural domestic violence, highlighting the paucity of studies focusing specifically on women’s understanding of their rural context. Throughout the article, emphasis is placed on the need to develop a perspective that is more inclusive of different women’s experiences and does not homogenise ‘rural culture’. A feminist poststructuralist model is adopted as an alternative to previous socio-cultural understandings of rural life and it is suggested that future research and practice embrace the multiple meanings and identities that co-exist in a particular community and recognise the benefits of moving beyond notions of patriarchy to those of ‘dominant discourses’ and the implications these have for victims of violence.
