Provides a background to the Sutherland Hospital Antenatal Clinic routine screening for domestic violence pilot project, presenting the aims, findings and conclusions of the study. Specific resources developed for the purpose of the pilot are also outlined. Discusses several issues raised in the course of both the pilot itself and the training of staff for screening, including the need for women to be separated from their partners when being interviewed, the difficulties staff experienced asking personal questions of patients and their anxiety regarding patients’ reactions. The outcomes and statistical findings of the pilot are then set out and it is noted that the Sutherland Hospital Antenatal Clinic continues to utilise the screening questions used in the pilot as a tool for identifying possible domestic/family violence situations.
