Notes: | This self-report study investigates the abuse and risk of abuse of older women in Australia. More than 12,000 women aged 70 to 75 years provided data to measure vulnerability, dependence, dejection and coercion. The Hwalek-Sengstock Elder Abuse Screening Test was modified to obtain a more reliable instrument. The findings reveal that diverse indicators of physical and psychological abuse are present in the life of women in their early 70s living in Australia. Women from non-English speaking backgrounds, women that make several visits to specialists, women who have a history of domestic violence and women who were in de facto relationships or separated, yielded higher vulnerability scores. Similarly, care providers are considered to be at higher risk of experiencing physical abuse. Dependence could not be related to abuse in any direct sense, and dejection seemed to be more a measure of depression. |
