Notes:  Presents the methodology and results of a research project in Canada aimed at exploring, through face to face interviews with victims, the avenues through which abused women seek out help and information and the outcomes of their interactions with various health, welfare and community services. Reviews recent literature on women’s use of information and help seeking patterns and identifies five factors which discourage successful help seeking. Suggests that women escaping violent relationships prioritise protection, shelter and distance from their abusive partners and will most often seek the assistance of police or emergency services, although the demeanour of service staff was viewed as an influential factor. Argues for the recognition of responsibility, by service providers, for removing existing barriers and the development of a sustained and coordinated community response to domestic violence.
