Notes:  General Overview: This paper examines the use of language in the perpetration of intimate partner violence and in its outcomes. It illustrates how the power dynamics of gender and violence depend on language. Important examples used are the concept of maternal alienation, a form of psychological and emotional abuse aimed at women, and Parental Alienation Syndrome (PAS), a concept referred to in many family court cases in the UK, US, Australia, New Zealand and Canada to portray women as hostile and manipulative.

The article shows how the creation of language was required to name what was happening to women. Following from that, it also demonstrates the importance to counselling practice of bringing together language and women’s lived experience.
