Notes: | This article reports the findings from a qualitative New Zealand study which interviewed 19 men who had male sexual partners about their experiences of forced, coerced or unwanted sex by their partners. These interviews were conducted as part of a larger study focused on sexual coercion and unwanted sex among men with male partners. The authors identified and explored in detail four main themes around forced sex: use of physical force, experiences involving the victim’s level of intoxication, power dynamics facilitated by partner age differences and feelings of obligation and no other options. Concluding comments examine how some aspects of gay men’s culture and a heteronormative environment increase men’s vulnerability, as well as the similarity to women’s heterosexual experiences of forced sex. |
