Notes: | Outlines the methodology and results of a UK study aimed at ascertaining whether demographic, clinical and criminological variables associated with stalking, homicide and serious assault are the same as those associated with less serious acts of violence also involving stalking. A background to research into stalking as an antecedent to violence is provided and a review of literature concerning the various social and psychological factors associated with stalking is conducted. The findings identify patterns of offending history, relationship to victim, stalking behaviour, use of threats/weapons and seriousness of assault, and it is suggested that those stalkers who commit serious acts of assault and/or homicide possess a very different demographic, psychological and criminological profile to those who engage in less serious forms of violence. Some implications for intervention and prevention are also identified. |
