Notes:  Discussion: The authors outline the Australian context of the nature and incidence of intimate partner violence. They point to the lack of advice for general practitioners (GPs) and other barriers to intervention even though, as the primary carer, a GP may have the opportunity to intervene. The paper describes the process of international consultation and review which produced the consensus guidelines, including some controversial issues such as screening. The authors outline the key recommendations as follows:

* children – parenting, risk assessment, access to support
They conclude by endorsing the guidelines and emphasising the urgent need for training, support and resources for GPs dealing with families.
