Title: The ALRC's inquiry into family violence and Commonwealth laws
Other Titles: Parity
Authors: Hoang, Khanh
Year: 2011
Citation: No 8 Vol.: 24
Notes:  The ALRC has produced a summary document to compliment the release of the 2010 report 'Family Violence- a National Legal Response' discussion paper, which refers to potential law reform in the area of family violence and Commonwealth law. This article offers a further summary of the report, and themes and issues which informed the report's recommendations. Of particular significance to the proposals was the idea of 'seamlessness' in policy principle in way of developing a common interpretative framework which can be adopted across all legislative areas under review, and the need for cross-agency information sharing to flag concern for families at risk. Further, the report emphasises the need for 'system integrity' within appropriate agencies and the considered protection of individual autonomy when assisting individuals through the legislative processes of managing family violence. Outlining key proposals made in the ALRC discussion paper, the article provides links for the submissions to the final report.
