Notes:  Reviews some of the central points of the World Report on Violence and Health released by the World Health Organization in 2002. The public health community, alarmed at the negative consequences of violence manifested around the globe, declared violence a major public health issue. As a response, a number of plans and strategies to prevent violence were developed. This article presents an overview of the report including definitions and types of violence, the magnitude of the problem, the main causes and some of the preventive mechanisms. The policies to prevent violence include the availability of services, early intervention, interagency collaboration, efficient data collection, family empowerment and the promotion of values that reject the mistreatment of women and children.
