Mary Delahunty, Minister for Women’s Affairs, announced new government spending on family violence for the next three years. Representatives from the Department of Justice described an Inventory Project to audit all Department of Justice initiatives and assess their impact on women. Also announced was the holding of a training forum for magistrates, a review of the Crimes (Family Violence) Act to be undertaken by the Victorian Law Reform Commission and the implementation of the government strategy document, ‘Safer Streets and Homes’, one of whose themes is the prevention of family violence. Christine Nixon, Commissioner of Victoria Police, discussed the review of police responses to family violence led by Commander Leigh Gassner which resulted in 25 recommendations currently being implemented. Nixon has also introduced a Statewide Steering Committee to Reduce Family Violence made up of representatives from government, education and human services and rural, multicultural and indigenous groups. The Commissioner also commented on the need for improved data collection, consistency of response to family violence and increased consultation both within the Police force and between the police and areas of government.
