Notes:  This article presents the findings of a prospective cohort study carried out in Brazil between July 2005 and December 2006 when 1133 pregnant women attending a primary health-care clinic were interviewed during pregnancy and after delivery.

The aim of the study was to examine the relationship between postnatal depression and physical, psychological and sexual violence against pregnant women perpetrated by an intimate partner.

* Psychological abuse was positively associated with postnatal depression independent of the occurrence of physical or sexual violence
