| Notes: | This US applied research paper explains the global lack of consensus on the prevalence of violence against pregnant and postpartum women. The article focuses on physical violence, as research shows that it occurs more often than emotional and sexual violence. Risk factors for violence are outlined, relating to previous experiences of violence, age and marital status. Outcomes of violence include emotional health problems including depression and post-traumatic stress disorder; and physical health problems to the child and mother, including premature labour, miscarriage and, in some cases, death. Finally, discussing the limited data on the effectiveness of current interventions, the article calls for more scrupulous research to be conducted. |
