Notes: | This paper examines the public health approach to domestic violence and suggests some preventive strategies. Individual practitioners generally fail to detect and document abuse. Fear of offending patients, time constraints and lack of training hinder helpful intervention. Population screening of women for domestic violence raises ethical and safety issues. To improve patients’ wellbeing, it is suggested to provide appropriate tools and training in the hospital setting. Health professionals can be a meaningful bridge to specialised services. A case study is presented, and a number of recommendations for doctors for dealing with domestic violence are offered. |
