Notes:  Overview:This article reports on a US study which used data from 14,564 men aged 20 and older from the 2004-2005 wave of the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions to determine if the observed association between witnessing intimate partner violence (IPV) in childhood and perpetration of intimate partner violence in adulthood is causal.

However, further research into the causality of intimate partner violence needs to be done as it was also found that among men who committed intimate partner violence in the past year, 71% had not witnessed IPV in childhood and among men who had witnessed intimate partner violence in childhood, 91% had not perpetrated IPV in the past year.
