Notes:  Overview:The ACT Elder Abuse Policy Framework has been created as a guide for ACT government agencies to develop protocols to allow staff to respond competently to situations of elder abuse within their work sphere.

Discussion:The Framework provides a definition of elder abuse, which may be financial, psychological, physical, sexual or social abuse. The definition also includes neglect, both intentional and unintentional.

Drawn from the Legal Issues Manual, NSW Advisory Committee on Abuse of Older People:and the Queensland Government’s Strategic Plan for the Prevention of Elder Abuse in Queensland:, the following principles will provide the foundation on which the government protocols will be built:
The Framework provides for issues of privacy and confidentiality, duty of care, departmental responsibilities and annual reporting by government departments.
