Authors: Department of Health
Keywords: Screening;Leaving/Staying;Health
Year: 2005
Publisher: Department of Health
Notes:  General Overview: This hand book is aimed at both front line health workers and management in the Department of Health, United Kingdom. It provides information about domestic violence and how to respond to disclosures.

Discussion: This handbook is directed at health workers, especially those who work directly with patients. It provides a definition of domestic abuse, outlines some barriers to leaving the relationship or disclosing abuse, and discusses the prevalence, the effects, and the economic and health costs of abuse.

The handbook explains how to create a supportive environment for disclosure of abuse, what signs might indicate abuse, how to ask about abuse and how to respond to disclosures. Workers are encouraged to provide support and information, to help the patient to assess risk and create a safety plan. Guidance is given about safe record keeping and information sharing.

Managers are given guidance on how to introduce routine enquiry, create and implement a domestic abuse policy, participate in multi-agency initiatives and monitor, evaluate and audit health service initiatives.

Appendices outline the membership and recommendations of the Domestic Abuse and Pregnancy Advisory Group, and provide information about women from minority ethnic groups, older women, disabled women, lesbians and bisexual women, young women, traveller women, middle class women, women who misuse drugs and alcohol, sex workers and women with learning disabilities. Sample safety plans, risk assessments and referral information are also included.
