Prepared with the intention of demonstrating the relationship between alcohol/drug abuse and domestic violence and the need for more coordinated and collaborative responses to the issue, this paper provides an overview of available data on domestic violence and its economic and social costs to the community. Cites a range of US and Australian studies that indicate a link between domestic violence and licit/illicit drug use. Initiatives of the Anti Violence Project aimed at addressing this issue are discussed and a range of recommendations for future policy, practice and funding arrangements are made. A detailed description of the structure and nature of the AVP and a summary of the evaluation of groups provided through the programme are also included.
