Title: Family violence and homelessness : a review of the literature
Authors: Novac, Sylvia
Keywords: Housing
Year: 2006
Publisher: National Clearinghouse on Family Violence
Notes:  General Overview: This literature review examines research on the relationship between family violence and homelessness, and concludes that family violence is a significant contributing factor to homelessness in Canada.

Discussion: This review examines literature published between 1987 and 2002 on family violence and homelessness. It focuses on the relationship between the two conditions, the implications for service providers and the gaps in research.

Homelessness may be absolute, meaning the person is sleeping rough or using an emergency shelter, or relative, meaning the person has inadequate, temporary or unsafe shelter. It has recently been recognised that victims of family violence make up a significant proportion of the relatively homeless. Homeless people are much more likely to have experienced family violence, both as children or as adults, than the general population. More severe violence is associated with a higher risk of homelessness.

The review examines the literature specific to Aboriginal people, immigrants, rural and remote communities, older adults and people with intellectual disabilities and mental health problems. It also examines the implications for service provision and policy setting. Finally, it identifies topics for further research, including the association of childhood molestation with homelessness, the immediate causes of homelessness and mechanisms that protect against homelessness.
