Notes: | The New South Wales government introduced a number of changes to de facto relationship laws in 1999 giving gay men and lesbians the same rights as heterosexual couples in most areas of the law. However there still exist important areas in the law which differentiate between the two sectors of the community and this booklet acts as a general guide in answering questions about legal rights for the gay community. It covers longstanding rights like anti-discrimination, privacy and violence and also discusses new rights for same sex couples like owning property, compensation and death and inheritance. Areas where there is still unequal treatment under the law including parenting issues and age of consent are discussed. A list of further reading and also contact details for appropriate legal and other organisations is included. |
