It summarises the causes of women abuse such as the male need to control, socialisation of girls, stereotypes of masculinity and the role of men in society, violence in the media, societal attitudes condoning violence against women and the inequality of women. It presents an advocacy wheel as a model outlining the key principles to guide intervention with abused women, as well as basic tips on how to support an abused woman. It refers to services and resources in Canada which can help women and children. It outlines the effects of woman abuse on a child and the potential impacts of violence at different ages. It explains the difference between woman abuse and marital conflict, including their different intervention response as well as intervention for children. It advises on how to respond to child disclosures of abuse and neglect, how to support a child during a disclosure, and how to report child maltreatment. Standards of professional conduct in Canada when working with vulnerable children are provided. It also advises the worker or professional on how to take care of themselves.
