It discusses the nature and effects of domestic violence, and the barriers to reporting. It encourages women to call a domestic violence helpline. Discussion:Information is presented in a narrative form from a domestic violence worker, a facilitated round table discussion, personal stories given by three survivors and a segment from the television show Today Tonight:. The nature of domestic violence is discussed, including physical, verbal, emotional, financial and sexual abuse, controlling behaviours, isolation from family and friends and abuse of pets. Domestic violence results in anxiety and depression, and the exacerbation of health problems such as heart disease and diabetes. Older women are less likely to report domestic violence than younger women. Shame and embarrassment is a significant barrier for older women. They fear that if they end the relationship they will lose their home and have no money. Some women do not leave because the abuser has threatened to harm or kill them if they leave. The DVD encourages women to call a domestic violence helpline and a range of referrals are displayed on the screen. The narrator notes that a person who does not understand domestic violence may give an unsympathetic or unhelpful response, and women should speak to a trained worker. Suggestions for a facilitator using the DVD in a group setting are included in the cover notes.
