Authors: Vera Institute of Justice
Keywords: Perpetrators;Criminal justice responses
Year: 2004
Publisher: Vera Institute of Justice
Notes:  This US video/DVD is about 25 to 30 minutes of viewing time, and is funded by the Office on Violence Against Women, US Department of Justice. It introduces the concept and practice of judicial reviews for viewers who have a basic understanding of domestic violence issues, and is aimed at professionals working with the criminal justice system (e.g. judges, probation officers, court administrators, prosecutors, defendants, law enforcement staff, batterer intervention programme providers, and governmental and non-governmental victim advocates).

This resource shows the benefits of domestic violence judicial review hearings, the components of reviews and the impact they have on the system. It includes courtroom highlights of actual judicial review hearings and comments from key players in the 3 demonstration sites funded to improve the safety of victims of domestic violence and to hold offenders accountable. The 3 locations' details of review hearings differ but they all focus on enhancing offender and system accountability by having probationers appear before the judge at regular intervals during their probationary period.

A booklet accompanying the video addresses some frequently asked questions (FAQs) about domestic violence judicial reviews, such as: who is involved in a review hearing; how do the review hearings differ from revocation hearings; do review hearings change the role of probation; the role of batterer intervention programmes; the types of graduated sanctions or rewards; how are victim safety concerns handled; and how information about a case can be shared.
