Notes:  This report presents the findings of focus groups conducted with workers who assisted women seeking Apprehended Domestic Violence Orders (ADVOs) in New South Wales. The focus groups were conducted in 2009 with 24 participants from organisations including women’s refuges, family support services, domestic violence (DV) outreach services, solicitors, and Domestic Violence Court Advocacy Services (DVCAS).

Findings from the focus groups cover the following subjects related to the ADVO process: police responses; Domestic Violence Liaison Officers; Women’s Domestic Violence Court Advocacy Services; magistrates; police prosecutors; resources and administrative barriers (such as private ADVO applications); interagency collaboration; gaps in support services (housing and specialist domestic violence services); and structural inequalities affecting women from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds, Indigenous women, older women and women with intellectual disability.

The report also presents participant recommendations relating to police, courts and DV support services.
