Notes:	This Australian study explored the experiences of women who had applied for a domestic violence protection order (also known as an Apprehended Violence Order or AVO) in New South Wales. The study is based on in-depth interviews with 40 women, of whom 28 had been successful in obtaining an AVO. The group included 34 women who had sought orders against a current or previous intimate partner and six women who had sought an order against another person, such as a family or household member. The group was culturally diverse, with 14 women identifying as Aboriginal and five identifying as being from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds. The study provides an account of women's experiences across the legal system, including their encounters with police, legal personnel and courts. It reports on women's reasons for seeking protection, the barriers to obtaining a protection order (including the barriers associated with pursuing legal action across multiple legal systems) and their perceptions of the outcome. Three broad themes arising from the study are discussed in the final chapter of the report: first, women struggled to be heard during the legal process; second, even when successful in obtaining an AVO, many women retained a strong sense of injustice; and third, questions arise as to whether the legislative provisions governing AVOs in New South Wales are being fully utilised.
