Notes:  The purpose of the New South Wales Child Death Review Team (CDRT, the Team) is to provide information about child deaths and to prevent or reduce the number of deaths in New South Wales of children and young people from birth to 17 years of age.

Chapter 5 deals with assault as the cause of death. During 2008, twelve children and young people died as a result of assault in eight separate incidents. Six of the incidents occurred at the family home. Half of the children were identified as vulnerable. Many of the young people had experienced ongoing personal or family issues. The most common issues experienced were domestic violence, family discord, alcoholism in the family and mental illness.

Of the 12 assaults, 10 occurred in the context of familial relationships, where the injuries were inflicted by parents, spouses, domestic partners or other family members. Six of these children died in the context of family breakdown.
