This UK study examined domestic violence incidents and patterns over six years as reported by police in Northumbria, England to explore gender differences among perpetrators and victims taking into consideration context and consequences. The number of women arrested as perpetrators showed a slight increase. Men were found to be significantly more likely to be repeat perpetrators, use more severe violence and use violence involving fear and control of victims. Cases of dual arrest were found to be more varied and complicated. Alcohol abuse was common among perpetrators and in cases of dual arrest. Additional findings regarding child contact, use of weapons and withdrawal of victim statements are addressed.en
