Overview: This paper presents the results of a study comparing characteristics of offenders convicted of a domestic violence offence in a specialist domestic violence court with those from other courts in Ontario, Canada.<br/ ><br/ >Discussion: This paper reports on a study comparing offence characteristics, criminal history and recidivism of offenders who were convicted of a domestic violence offence in an Ontario Domestic Violence Court (DVC), with offenders convicted in other Ontario courts. The study examined the influence of criminal history, as well as spousal conviction and sentence characteristics, on the likelihood of recidivism. A sample of 500 offenders from Ontario DVCs and a sample of 500 offenders from other courts in Ontario were analysed using Statistical Analysis System software.<br/ ><br/ >A few variables showed significant difference between the two court types: age, seriousness of violence and sentencing. Several other variables were found to play a statistically significant role in the likelihood of recidivism. However, the influence of a DVC on reducing the overall likelihood of recidivism was not demonstrated.en
