Produced by Inner South Community Health Service Inc. and Child Abuse Research Australia, Monash University<br/ >General Overview: This research report from Victoria reports on the results of an exploratory qualitative study into the manifestations, possible causes and impacts of adolescent male violence towards their mothers.<br/ ><br/ >Discussion: This Australian report compiled by the Inner South Community Health Service and Child Abuse Research Australia, Monash University, comprises one aspect of the ‘It all Starts at Home’ project, which aims to improve the community’s understanding of adolescent violence against their parents and to provide better support to parents experiencing adolescent violence. Ten women, with a total of twelve violent sons aged between thirteen and nineteen, were interviewed as part of the research.<br/ ><br/ >The report, which focuses on adolescent male violence towards their mothers, includes a literature review examining the prevalence of adolescent violence against their caregivers. It details the types of violence perpetrated by adolescent males against their mothers, the possible causes for this behaviour, including their own experience of domestic violence, and the impact that violent behaviour has on their mothers and other family members. The report concludes with a list of recommendations relating to the recognition of and response to adolescent violence towards caregivers, which include the need for further research into the issue, community awareness raising, specialised support for women and their children, professional development for support workers, and the expansion of men’s behavioural change programs to incorporate the impact of family violence on adolescents.en
