dc.description.notes | Overview: The paper reports on research aimed at estimating the various and total costs of domestic and intimate partner violence for the state, society, employers and victims.<br/ ><br/ >Methodology: The methodology adapts the Home Office (UK) framework for costing crime to include the specific cost of domestic violence. Information was taken from various sources, research and surveys and includes information pertaining to domestic violence, rape, assault and stalking by intimates and domestic violence against men and women. Information on costs (services) was derived from the Home Office study (BCSIPV), reports and other recent research. Information on service usage was gathered from reports by service providers and the BCSIPV.<br/ ><br/ >Aims: The author argues that a better understanding of the full cost of domestic violence will allow the development of an additional policy framework regarding finance, to complement existing policy frameworks based on need and justice. By adding a financial dimension to the picture of domestic violence, the paper aims to increase the range of interventions available and the ways in which they can be articulated and measured.<br/ ><br/ >Discussion: The paper begins by defining domestic violence and costs, outlining the methodology used and listing the main costs. A literature review of previous research and its implications for the study is presented and a summary is provided of the incidence and nature of domestic violence in Britain at the time of writing.<br/ ><br/ >Conclusion: The paper concludes with a summation of all costs considered and an outline of how the estimates were developed in each case. The limitations, implications and other issues surrounding the conclusions and research are outlined and discussed. | en |
