General Overview: This report on a pilot project details the development and testing of four questionnaires designed to measure the attitudes of men undertaking a batterer intervention program.<br/ ><br/ >Objective: The authors aimed to determine whether reliable measures could be developed of men’s attitudes to their own abusive behaviour, to women and to the intervention program. They did not attempt to evaluate the intervention program but their work lays the foundations for such evaluation in future.<br/ ><br/ >Methods: Men participating in a Partner Assault Response program in Ontario, Canada, were asked to complete a questionnaire before and after the intervention program. Their counsellors were asked to indicate whether each man was likely to abuse his intimate partner in the future.<br/ ><br/ >Results: Of the 41 men who participated in the initial stage of the study, only 14 men completed post-assessment data. Most of the remainder did not complete the program (13 men) or could not be located (8 men). The pre-assessment questionnaire revealed that the participants did not take personal responsibility for their abusive behaviour, exhibited a high level of partner blaming attitudes and denied relationship difficulties. They did not generally endorse sexist attitudes and most approached treatment with positive attitudes. They were accurate in identifying about 80% of abusive behaviours but were less successful in identifying dangerous cognitions.<br/ >Conclusion: There is good potential for the use of attitude measures in the evaluation of Partner Assault Response programs. However, additional research is needed on the expected links between attitudes and behaviour.en
