This Canadian report gives an overview of the Learning Circle discussions held with Aboriginal women and organisations funded by the Aboriginal Women’s Program in Canada. The Learning Circle summarises the lessons learned from the 14 projects in Canada in relation to their approaches to family violence and to healing. The aims of the Learning Circle discussions were to: share knowledge about the projects and their lessons; explore issues such as working with extended family members to address family violence, responding to family violence in culturally specific ways and finding ways to promote healing. The discussions highlighted factors that contributed to the success of projects at the community level such as: a focus on traditional ways of teaching, learning and healing; leadership; vision; involvement of Elders and of family; connection to the community; and intergenerational activity. Key issues for future direction are also discussed.en
