Examines research suggesting the prevalence of female violence towards men is comparable to male violence against women and critiques these claims of gender symmetry in domestic violence from an empirical and substantive perspective. A background to the international debate over the nature of domestic violence and the gender of perpetrators is provided and the methodologies adopted by researchers to understand domestic violence are contrasted. Suggests that, because crime victimisation studies and family conflict studies measure different phenomena, their findings cannot be conceptually or methodologically reconciled. The need for more inclusive measures and explanations of domestic violence is advocated.
